Arc Mapping Update - Instructor: Mark Svare, PE – MSD Engineering.
This presentation will discuss the appropriate uses and effectiveness of arc mapping during the course of a forensic fire investigation.  The presentation will incorporate data and findings from a series of test burns conducted in multi compartment structure in Covington, Louisiana and a number of hotel rooms conducted in Sisseton, South Dakota and will analyze the potential generation of arcs (and their potential usefulness) in circuits protected with arc fault current interrupter circuit breakers. Electrical safety and electrical testing devices will also be discussed

Mizpah Hotel Fire Case Study- Instructor: Special Agent Dan Heenan, ATF
This course will focus on a hotel fire at the historic Mizpah Hotel in Reno, Nevada on October 31, 2006. The fire resulted in the death of twelve people and the injury of an additional 31 making this the most catastrophic incendiary fire in the State’s history. The fire was investigated by several agencies including the ATF National Response Team. The class will discuss the issues with the command structure that was established as it relates to inter-agency cooperation; the collapse issues of the building and working in an unstable building; body recovery and processing; the origin and cause of the fire; using fire modeling, specifically Fire Dynamics Simulator, to assist in the origin and cause determination; and the subsequent criminal investigation and trial.

Ventilation Effects on Fire Development - Instructor: Special Agent Robert Schaal, ATF
The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate the effects of ventilation on fire growth and development through the comparison of test burns using similar configurations.  The presentation will incorporate data and findings from a series of test burns conducted in multi compartment structure in Covington, Louisiana and a number of hotel rooms conducted in Sisseton, South Dakota as well as data and findings from other controlled burns conducted during previous training events.  The research was conducted by the Louisiana Chapter of the IAAI and the Minnesota Chapter of the IAAI with both projects were sponsored by grants from the IAAI Foundation.

Fire Investigation and the Medical Examiner - Instructor: Dr. Mike DeFatta,
TPSP Coroner’s Office
This presentation will discuss the role of the medical examiner and medicolegal death investigations as it relates to forensic fire investigation and will discuss effective techniques for examining and preserving fatal fire victims to ensure the greatest possibility of recovering evidence that will support the origin and cause investigation and the cause of death investigation. The presentation will also discuss fire investigator/medical examiner relations.
